Did you know your wisdom teeth can cause swelling? Well, it’s true. It often happens when your teeth are impacted, when you have a natural response to injury or infection, and when your gums are irritated. The swelling can cause pain and discomfort. So, if you ever experience this problem, our prosthodontist, Dr. Ajey Varma, would like to help you by giving you some tips to solve it.
First, rinse your mouth with saltwater or an oral rinse that was given to you by your dentist. Rinsing your mouth can help you remove the food particle or object that is stuck in the gums and causing irritation. Rinsing can also kill bacteria, clean the area, and reduce swelling as well as pain.
Second, ice the area. All you need to do is place a cold compress on the area or outside the cheek to reduce the swelling and pain. You can even place an ice cube on the surrounding gums if you would like to. Just be careful not to accidentally swallow the ice. For further comfort, take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication.
